Dr. Naiphinich Kotchabhakdi was a medical student at the Faculty of Medical Science and Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University and received B.Sc. in Medical Science with Honor in 1970 from Mahidol University. He continued clinical study in Radiology, Medicine, and Surgery at Ramathibodi Hospital. In the fall of 1970, he received the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) Scholarship to study Neuro-behavioral biology at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA, and received Ph.D. in Neuro-Behavioral Biology (Neuroscience) in 1974. While study in the USA, he visited the Laboratories of Neurobiology and Neurophysiology at NIH, and was also a summer student and a research fellow at the Marine Biological Laboratory in woods Hole, Massachusetts, during the summer of 1972 and 1973. Returning to Mahidol University in Thailand, he was appointed as a lecturer in the departments of Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology and Anatomy at the Faculty of Science in 1974. In 1975, he was chief of the Laboratory of Neurobiology and later in 1976 became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy where he taught medical neurobiology to medical students.
In 1976, Dr. Naiphinich received NORAD (Norwegian Agency for International Development) postdoctoral fellowship to work at the Anatomical Institute, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Oslo in Norway. The work has led to a 40 years extension of research collaborations and academic exchanges between Mahidol University and the University of Oslo in the field of brain research (now called “Neuroscience”). With supports from NORAD, International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), UNESCO, and World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Naiphinich organized the first International Workshop on Basic Neuroscience in Thailand in February and March 1978.
In 1979, he became an Associate Professor in Anatomy, and UNESCO/IBRO Special Lecturer for Basic Neuroscience in Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines), and the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, as well as a special lecturer in Behavioural Sciences in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculties of Medicine of Siriraj and Chulalongkorn Hospitals. In 1982, Dr. Naiphinich was appointed as the founder and chairman of the first Graduate Program in Neuroscience at Mahidol University Salaya. From 1984 to 2009, he was appointed as the first founding Director of the Neuro- and Behavioural Biology Center, and chairman of the International Graduate Program in .Neuroscience in the Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development,Mahidol University. In 1996 -1997, Dr. Naiphinich and his wife, Dr. Nittaya J. Kotchabhakdi MD, a developmental behavioral pediatrician, drafted the proposal for the development of Thailand’s National Institute for Child and Family Development (NICFD) which was approved and initially established in the Thai Government Office of the Prime Minister on October 2nd, 1997 and later transferred to Mahidol University Salaya Campus. In 1999, Dr. Naiphinich received the 4 Million Thai Baht Cerebos-Mahidol University Research Grant Award for conducting series of researches on the benefits of Essence of Chicken Extracts on brain and body functions. In 2009, Dr. Naiphinich was invited to undertake a research and development project to develop human autologous stem cells for the stem cell therapy of many diseases by a group of medical investors.
